Testing with the DSP-FTK (DSP-4x00)

Attach the DSP-FTK to the DSP4X00.
Switch on the DSP-FOM to 850nm and the FOS850/1300 to 850nm. Connect the two using a short reference cord.

This needs to be a good fiber patch cord with clean end faces. Leave the FOS850/1300 on for 5 minutes allowing the source to stabilize. If the storage temperature of the DSP-FOS was below 20C (68F), you may need to leave this longer.
Rotate the dial on the DSP-4X00 to SETUP. Select DSP-FTK / DSP-FOM in the Standards Menu.

Now select Multimode



Notice the Loss value. It is -6,41 dB. We therefore need to set the reference. To do this, press Set Ref. You should do this every time you switch on the DSP good practice.

Then press to set the reference.

The DSP-4X00 is now making a loss measurement. This is a continuous measurement. For 62,5/125 m multimode cable, the reference should be around -20,00 dBm. For 50/125 m multimode cable, expect it to be around -24,7 dBm.
If you fail to get a Reference around -20,00 dBm, check that the switches on the DSP-FOM and FOS850/1300 are set to 850nm. Also, make sure that the fiber cord is connected to the 850nm port of the FOS850/1300.
In the screen above, you will see that the measured loss is not reading exactly zero. This is normal. However, if this drifts more than 0,05 dB, you should repeat the reference measurement. It is an indication that the source has not stabilized.
Leaving the cord connected to the source, remove the fiber test cord from the DSP-FOM. Take a known good cord and connect it to the DSP-FOM. Then connect it to the link you wish to test. Below is an example of a measurement.

If you wish to change the limit, press.

Now press.

Using the function keys, we will change this to 2,00 dB.

Once done, press followed by.

You will now see the new loss budget.
To save the result, press. It is at this moment the reading is taken.

Enter the Cable ID and press again.
